From first hand experience I can attest that being a child of divorce is challenging and sometimes confusing. When I was about 3 months old my parents separated and my mom was granted primary custody while my dad was given every other weekend and half of holidays. I sometimes questioned the appropriateness of this as I was growing up. I now see different and more collaborative approaches to custody and visitation. The concept of co-parenting is becoming more and more common. But along with collaborative co-parenting there is also a rise in toxic parenting syndrome which leaves the kids in the middle of an unfair and bitter divide. This can have harmful and traumatic repercussions. My dad is now a Family Law Judge and has the difficult decision to make regularly regarding the what is in the best interest of the child/ren. Family Law is definitely a calling and a passion for attorneys and I want to be a supportive ally. At this time I am getting further training and will be getting involved with CASA to develop more in this area.
